A by-product of today’s internet age, Toronto’s Abel Tesfaye took Canada by storm with three mixed tapes that he had released to the internet, garnering fans and acclaim without the benefit of a “commercial release”. Trilogy gathers those three albums and tacks on a few additional tracks for good measure. So is the hype warranted? It certainly is on some levels. Tesfaye’s voice is smooth, recalling Frank Ocean while the musical accompaniment, primarily rooted in R&B, includes flourishes of electronica and trip hop.
