One of hip-hop’s finest groups, The Roots latest effort is a remarkable piece of work that is based upon a fictional character, Redford Stephens. The album begins with Stephens’ death and proceeds to reflect upon a life that was taken too soon. Frankly though, Undun is done in a manner that it doesn’t necessarily come across as a concept album. Though the overall tone of the record is melancholic, it is also undeniably smooth and fluid from start to finish. Each of these songs could easily stand on its own outside of the context of this record. The record delivers numerous highlights including One Time, Kool On and Tip The Scale.
