There is a very fine line separating The Rocket Summer from mindless wanna-be pop drivel like Hedley and other boy bands. But like his counterparts, Bryce Avary (the one man band who is essentially the Rocket Summer) relies on soaring choruses and hooky pop melodies that, no matter how hard you try, you simply can’t escape. And this record is packed to the hilt with them. While this sort of power pop might be too sickly sweet for some, Avary’s knack for pop melody can’t be denied and is best heard on tracks such as Roses, Hey! and You Gotta Believe.
