Max Cavalera’s post-Sepultura band Soulfly has been punishing audiences for the better part of almost 15 years. Unrelenting double kick drumbeats and solid guitar work help to drive Cavalera’s demonic vocals in bold directions that few other metal bands can pull off so convincingly. Fusing thrash metal, death metal and more, Cavalera helps keep the band’s aggression in check, delivering metered doses throughout the record without ever allowing it to become too overbearing at any given point. Though they might not reap the commercial success of other bands in the world of heavy metal, Soulfly stay true to what they do so well and so uncompromisingly that commercial success is practically irrelevant at this point.
