Remember when it seemed like Sam Roberts was going to be the next great Canadian rock hero? He had a lot of people hoping this would be the case and he assumed the role well with his 2003 debut. Producer Brian Deck gets some fantastic performances from the band on Collider, but the bulk of the 13 songs struck me as too safe. I wouldn’t have expected the middle of the road to be a satisfactory place for Roberts. The addition of horns on Streets of Heaven and The Last Crusade are a nice touch, but one can’t help but feel that Collider is a mid-life crisis for the group.
