Review: Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard – Django and Jimmie (Sony Music Canada)

Willie MerleOn Django and Jimmie, two of country music’s original outlaws – Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard – join forces to ruminate on the state of the world, a collaboration that should be music to the ears of those wondering what’s happened to the genre over the last decade. They pay tribute to their friend, the late Johnny Cash with the light-hearted “Missing Ol’ Johnny Cash,” evoking that same spirit on “It’s All Going To Pot,” and “It’s Only Money.” The album’s best moments, however, are found among the record’s numerous ballads. Tracks like “Unfair Weather Friend,” “Somewhere Between,” and “Live This Long” show that despite their getting on in age – Nelson just turned 82 years young, while Haggard is 78 – they can still evoke powerful, affecting feelings via their music.
