With a little help from her friends The Mavericks, Charlottetown native Whitney Rose nails her sophomore release with the greatest of ease. A classic country singer nurtured on the likes of Patsy Cline among others, Rose is blossoming (no pun intended) into one of the country’s most exciting artists. While the Mavericks accompaniment has contemporized Rose’s music somewhat, they also serve as the perfect complement to the singer. An air of spontaneity runs throughout Heartbreaker of the Year: From upbeat opening numbers “Little Piece of You” and “My First Rodeo” through waltzes like “The Last Party” and “Ain’t It Wise,” making for a wonderful, harmonious listen.
