On prior Whitehorse efforts, the Canadian husband and wife team of Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland have leaned more towards folk music than anything in the realm of rock, but with Leave No Bridge Unburned, they turn the tables with refreshing results. Over and above Doucet’s and McClelland’s flawless vocal harmonies, the duo travels down some darker musical paths here, indulging in some surf-influenced guitar on bouncy first single “Downtown” as well as album opener “Baby What’s Wrong,” while “Sweet Disaster” revels in an ominous-sounding mystery. It is ultimately Whitehorse’s refusal to be boxed into just one musical corner that makes this record one that you have to hear for yourself.
