Don’t be deceived by the album title. Contrary to what you might think, there is nothing remotely aggressive about the dozen songs contained on Tobias Jesso Jr.’s album Goon. Drawing influence from the likes of Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson, Jesso’s remarkable ability to get to the heart of the song, not to mention the accompanying melodies, is what makes this album such a killer. Heartbreak is the order of the day on Goon with topics of loss and regret abounding throughout the record. A ballad-heavy release that might not suit all tastes, Jesso’s retro pop goes down especially nicely on “Can We Still Be Friends,” “Without You,” “How Could You Babe,” and “Just A Dream.”
