In the spirit of Wilco and Billy Bragg’s collaboration on Woody Guthrie lyrics that had never been set to music, The New Basement Tapes takes the same approach but with Bob Dylan having penned the words. Helping bring these songs to life is My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Rhiannon Giddens, Elvis Costello, Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith and Marcus Mumford from Mumford & Sons. Produced by T-Bone Burnett, many of the album’s tracks have a loose, ramshackle kind of feel, evoking styles including the blues, folk and roots, all the while remaining true to their respective careers in music.
