The Mavericks are on a roll. Buoyed by the critical acclaim of their 2013 album In Time (after nearly a decade off, nonetheless), the group has returned in full force with their newest studio record, Mono. The Mavericks ability to seamlessly fuse Latin-influenced horns and percussion (“All Night Long,” “When I’m With You) with swing and jazz (“Stories We Could Tell,” “Fascinate Me”) and more sentimental fare (“Let It Rain”) is undoubtedly the band’s strong suit. Their willingness to think “outside the box” and refusal to be confined to making one specific style of music is what makes The Mavericks a true original act in this age of colour by numbers music. Mono hits stores this coming Tuesday.
