Review: The Decline Of Western Civilization DVD Collection (Shout Factory)

DeclineSomewhat remarkably, The Decline Of Western Civilization Collection brings together the three groundbreaking Decline… movies in one package for the first time. The first film, released in the wake of disco in 1981, focuses on the burgeoning punk scene in Los Angeles, featuring interviews with Circle Jerks, X, Black Flag and others. Musical tides changed drastically by the time the second edition of The Decline Of Western Civilization was released in 1988, with the film focusing on the heavy metal scene in L.A., while the previously unreleased third installment serves as a social commentary on homeless punks in the same West Coast city. Included along with the three original films is a bonus DVD which includes theatrical trailers, previously unseen footage, performances and interviews in addition to a nice 40-page booklet filled with photos and offering perspective upon the cultural impact of the films. The films, each beautifully restored in high definition, serve as a musical history lesson and should be considered essential viewing for the ardent music fan that seeks adventure.
