In spite of there being a four-year gap between studio albums, the much beloved folk-pop band The Decemberists sound as though they haven’t missed a beat with their newest record. The group’s skill at crafting intelligent, warm and uplifting melodies is a thing of beauty and remains in tact, as evidenced on “Calvary Captain,” “Lake Song” and the contemplative “Carolina Low.” Album opener “The Singer Address His Audience” gradually builds from a relatively unassuming track to an impressive climax, which in turn seems to be the recurring theme of the record: The Decemberists are one of a handful of bands that can capably fill out their songs but never to the point of the instrumentation being overdone.
