Ryan Adams’ solo debut Heartbreaker perfectly encapsulated the musician’s transition from a member of alt.country faves Whiskeytown to burgeoning solo artist, kicking off with the rousing “To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High),” before sweeping the listener up in the beauty of “Amy,” “Why Do They Leave,” and “Oh My Sweet Carolina.” Anyone that knows Adams also knows he is a prolific writer, so it should be little surprise that a second disc of rarities would be packed with unheard treasures, including a couple of fun outtakes and glimpses of songs in their earliest incarnation. Rounding out the set is a fantastic DVD of a solo show recorded in New York City not long after the album’s original release.
