While seemingly countless musicians have attempted (and continue to attempt) travelling the psychedelic paths laid down by Pink Floyd, only a handful have successfully pulled them off as well as New Hampshire’s Ray LaMontagne. Led by his whisper-quiet vocals, the musician steers his band through musically sparse tracks like “In My Own Way,” “Homecoming” and album closer “Wouldn’t It Make A Lovely Photograph” while simultaneously embracing big, fuzzy guitar sounds and bombastic jams on “Hey, No Pressure” and “While It Still Beats.” As he ironically acknowledges in the album’s closing moments that the listener is “never gonna hear this song on the radio,” it is then that you step back and can’t help but appreciate Ouroboros for its adventurous nature in an age of bloated production.
