When you sit down to watch Queen’s excellent new DVD, you are immediately given a sense of how overblown music has become. Here is one of the greatest rock bands of all time in 1974, pre-“Bohemian Rhapsody, ”absolutely killing it with only their songs. Imagine that! Led by the charismatic Freddie Mercury, Queen kick off their set with the one-two punch of “Now I’m Here” and “Ogre Battle” before delivering nearly note-perfect renditions of “Killer Queen,” “Keep Yourself Alive” and “Stone Cold Crazy.” What Queen’s stage show might have lacked in pyro and extras at this specific stage of their career is secondary to what really matters: the timeless music they made together as a group.
