Before passing away in 2000, Pops Staples, the patriarch of the acclaimed Staples Singers was working on an album of new music, which, though uncompleted at the time, he instructed his daughter Mavis not to lose the recordings, inadvertently giving the album its title. To help realize her father’s wishes, Mavis enlisted the help of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer to complete the recordings, breathing new life into a collection of R&B songs dominated by Pops frail vocals and unique style of guitar playing. Don’t Lose This is a stunning, if not bittersweet collection of music, highlighted by tracks including “Somebody’s Watching,” “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and “Love On My Side.”
