Review of The Jayhawks – Smile (Expanded Edition) (Universal Music Canada)

Jayhawks SmileAfter uncovering some previously unexplored lows on 1997’s Sound Of Lies, The Jayhawks returned with a much sunnier disposition on their 2000 record Smile, undergoing a bit of a musical shift in the process. The band largely relegated their alt.country roots to the backburner, pursuing a more direct pop sound in its place. Even with the detour in musical direction, the results were nothing short of spectacular thanks to strong album tracks like “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me,” “Somewhere In Ohio” and “Queen Of The World.” This reissue includes previously unreleased tracks along with demos and a wonderful live cover of “Life’s Little Ups and Downs.”
