The newest offering from British pop superstar Robbie Williams draws influence from the world of big band and swing music as well as a modern pop sound. The big band/swing direction works extremely well on Swings Both Ways and Soda Pop (featuring Rufus Wainwright and Michael Buble, respectively) while Shine My Shoes and Go Gentle are more straightforward pop. Swings Both Ways isn’t a bad listen by any means. As a listener however, I would much rather listen to a complete big band/swing album and a complete pop record as opposed to listening to the two genres be combined as he has done here.
