Saint John’s Penny Blacks seemed to wallow in more melancholic waters on their previous release, 2011’s wonderful Harbour. While that album had an undercurrent of optimism running through it, the first thing that struck me upon listening to The Silver Screen EP was the sheer amount of obvious optimism running through these four songs. The group’s sound is as tight as ever however they have also significantly loosened up, which lends more of a scrappy pop edge to the material. While it remains to be seen where Penny Blacks will lead us next, rest assured it is a ride I am looking forward to.
