Following JJ Cale’s untimely passing last year, it should be little surprise that his longtime friend and proponent Eric Clapton would curate an all-star cast of musicians to pay tribute to his late friend. Among those included are former Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Derek Trucks, Don White and John Mayer, each of who bring their respective styles to best serve the blues-driven material without anyone ever over-reaching in a self-serving manner. Album highlights include “Call Me The Breeze,” Petty’s take on “I Got The Same Old Blues,” and the Willie Nelson-led “Songbird.” A great starting point if you’re not already familiar with Cale’s work, The Breeze is one of the finer tribute albums of recent times.
