The latest addition to Bob Dylan’s awesome Bootleg Series is an interesting pick. Dylan’s 1970 release Self Portrait was widely panned by critics and his audience alike in what many look back upon as a deliberate self-sabotaging move on Dylan’s part. The double-disc collection reviewed here is not a straight reissue. Comprised of alternate versions of songs, live tracks and demos from Self Portrait and the follow-up release New Morning, Those new to Dylan might not appreciate this on quite the same level as the purists however the collection offers a vivid snapshot of an artist many felt could do no wrong.
