Over the last 35-plus years, Benmont Tench has been best known as being the man behind the piano for his pal Tom Petty. His debut solo record radiates a warmth that is largely understated, much like his role in Petty’s overall sound. He takes a note or two from Petty on tracks like Veronica Said and You Should Be So Lucky but still adds personal touches to the songs to make them his own. On the jazzy-sounding Ecor Rouge and the more exotic Dogwood, Tench stretches beyond what listeners might expect from him, delivering two of the record’s most satisfying moments.
