Throughout his career, Beck has worn numerous musical hats including that of eclectic alternative dynamo and that of folk troubadour. While the bulk of his commercial success has stemmed from the former, the latter has shown a more contemplative, singer-songwriter side that is equally, if not more, compelling. His newest record Morning Phase (due for release this Tuesday) could be described as a companion piece to 2002’s outright depressing Sea Change, but with considerable more optimism. The warm, lush nature of songs like the slow-burning Morning and Wave are two of numerous emotionally stunning moments to be found on this record.
