Inspired by the passing of his father, Afraid of Ghosts sees venerable songwriter Butch Walker team up with Ryan Adams to produce one of the most emotionally revealing albums of his career. Though Walker has consistently marched to the beat of his own drum on prior recordings, pursuing everything from glam rock through singer-songwriter territory, his newest album mines roots and alt.country territory. Walker relies on sparse arrangements and minimal instrumentation to lend an even greater impact to the listener. Album highlights include “Chrissie Hynde,” “Bed On Fire” and “Autumn Leaves.” Although the album was unfortunately inspired by such a tragic event, it ultimately highlights another dimension of Walker’s songwriting abilities. It is a suit he wears well.
