Originally released in 1988, reissued in 2000 and then reissued again this year to coincide with the release of the biopic Love & Mercy, Brian Wilson’s solo debut album followed years of virtual silence from the Beach Boys founder. At its best, the album shines with glimpses of Wilson’s undisputed songwriting genius, as heard on epic album closer “Rio Grande,” “Melt Away,” “Love and Mercy,” and “One For The Boys,” an obvious homage to his past with The Beach Boys. Aside from some obviously dated musical instruments and sounds, the album has held up relatively well otherwise. This collection is rounded out with a series of album outtakes and demos, along with a selection of interview segments, all of which will most likely only appeal to the ardent Brian Wilson / Beach Boys fan.
