Given their finite recorded output, it’s not abnormal for fans of the criminally underrated power pop band Big Star to have an interest in whatever unreleased material we can get our hands on. The latest addition to the Big Star collection is a June 1994 concert recorded at Chicago’s Metro, just months before the concert captured on last year’s Live In Memphis DVD. The set lists between the two shows are strikingly similar, however Picking Posies boasts the inclusion of the excellent “O My Soul,” alongside staples like “The Ballad Of El Goodo,” “I Am The Cosmos,” “Jesus Christ,” “In The Street,” as well covers of Todd Rundgren’s “Slut” and The Kinks’ “Till The End Of The Day.” Although the sound quality leaves something to be desired, the spirit of Big Star lives on, thanks to archival releases like this.
