Boasting a country sound that cannot be easily categorized, Toronto band One Hundred Dollars deliver a killer sophomore record with Songs Of Man. With haunting guitar playing guiding her, vocalist Simone Schmidt has an obvious great passion for her gift and with great reason. Sounding like a paranoid Natalie Merchant, Schmidt’s vocals seem to tell an urgent story, no matter what the soundtrack behind her is playing and is a big reason what helps make Songs Of Man so special to listen to. I dare you to not be drawn in by hypnotic tracks like Waiting On Another, Everybody Wins and Work. One Hundred Dollars might not fit the stereotypical “country” description but what they are making for music almost defies the necessity to slap a label onto them.
