…And now for the total antithesis to The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion: the Celtic, folk leanings of Britain’s Mumford & Sons. While the group is undoubtedly at home in the categories listed above, they owe a large amount of their sound to traditional Irish music groups such as The Pogues and Canada’s own Great Big Sea.
Although they incorporate more of the traditional-folk music in their sound in comparison to Great Big Sea, don’t be surprised to see Mumford & Sons eventually become stars here in Canada, especially here on the east coast. As Maritimers, we’ve proven our willingness to embrace music that is rooted in the sound of the Cape Breton Highlands. It is just a matter of time before we welcome Mumford & Sons into that fold.
