When the first track from Mayer Hawthorne’s sophomore record How Do You Do hits the speakers, it’s tough to discern whether the soul-influenced singer is merely being ironic or whether he’s legit. Turns out it is the latter because as How Do You Do progresses, the record ends up offering some shining moments. Already praised by the likes of John Mayer and Kanye West, Hawthorne wears his influences on his sleeve, bringing a very Motown-esque feel to many of the songs featured here. And though the lyrics to Can’t Stop verge on cringe-worthy, Hawthorne redeems himself rather capably on Dreaming and A Long Time.
