Anyone anticipating a bright, sunshiny return to power pop territory might be slightly off put by the latest effort from pop maestro Matthew Sweet. If anything, naming his newest album Modern Art is more than appropriate, showing that he can paint with multiple textures and still deliver decent results. For those worried that Sweet has taken a complete left-turn with his music, worry not: Sweet does not completely forsake power pop here. The influence of The Byrds shines through on She Walks The Night and Baltimore while some of the record’s other highlights include the bluesy strut of Ladyfingers and the simple orchestral beauty of the title track.
