Though Lyle Lovett has largely been pigeonholed as a country artist in the 26 years since his debut effort, he has been one of the more daring artists in the genre, as comfortable singing singer-songwriter fare as he is leading a big band. It should be no surprise then that Release Me features Lovett wearing all of his musical hats. Boasting only three Lovett originals, his selection of cover songs such as Chuck Berry’s Brown Eyed Handsome Man and Jesse Winchester’s Isn’t That So help to make a good thing even better.
