Considering he has written a record based around various roads of his home province of Manitoba, Provincial is a more than appropriate title for this release from Weakerthans principal John K Samson. The lazy man’s way to sum up the record would be to classify it as indie-rock while in actuality, Samson’s roots run much deeper. It is not that Samson has totally eschewed indie rock by any means; Longitudinal Centre, Cruise Night and When I Write My Master’s Thesis all capably meet the indie-rock criteria. It is more introspective moments like Heart Of The Continent and The Last And where Samson perhaps shines the brightest and helps make Provincial such a rewarding listen.
