Owing an almost equal debt to Prince and Phoenix, perhaps one of the biggest surprises about the newest record from Jamie Lidell is that while some of the sounds contained on the record hail from the 80’s, he still manages to sound current. With an abundance of synths and pre-programmed drums, it is initially tough to know whether Lidell is being intentionally ironic or not however his soulful vocals easily washes away any doubt the listener might have regarding the sincerity of the music he is making. It is an interesting mix of music but one that in fact works.
