A stark, stunning record in the singer-songwriter vein, the feelings of isolation that permeate Rhythm and Repose are both intimate and compelling. Written after Hansard spent approximately 18 months in New York City while also enduring a break-up, Cat Stevens might be one of the best reference points here. Though Hansard’s songs deal less with moon shadows and more with the heart, it is hard not to be drawn in by the emotive, gentle nature of these songs.
