Reduced to a duo since their last release, the diminished numbers among Dog Day’s ranks do little to quell their infectiously raw souls. But rather than sounding minimalist by force, the husband and wife team of Seth Smith and Nancy Urich embrace their fortune and work it to their advantage. Although Deformer might not be the most technically perfect record you will come across this year, it has such passion running through it that any perceptions of instrumental shortcomings can easily be overlooked. With a nice mix of somewhat accessible pop songs like Part Girl, What She Says and Eurozone, Dog Day shows that comparably experimental fare such as Bluish Gray and the dark acoustic track Mr. Freeze can be just as enticing and exciting of a listen.
