The solo debut from Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn has much of the same brilliance that he brings to the band albeit with a very different vehicle. Saying that Clear Heart Full Eyes is more thoughtful than The Hold Steady would be doing his full-time band a great disservice so perhaps calling Finn’s solo work low-key would be the most appropriate. Finn has traded anthemic rock songs for a more deliberate sound that lies closer to singer-songwriter territory that leans into alt.country. While it is It is a hat he wears well and shows that he is no one trick pony, I’m still anxious to hear him rock out again.
