Catherine MacLellan – Silhouette (True North Records)

The daughter of legendary songwriter Gene MacLellan, Catherine MacLellan has seemingly inherited her father’s knack for writing memorable folk songs.  MacLellan walks a road previously traveled by her father, Blue Rodeo, Kathleen Edwards and others. MacLellan’s timeless vocals light up each of these 14 superbly written songs that run the gamut from hopeful to heartbreaking that ultimately show the song writing apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Her re-imagined take on her father’s classic song Songbird is breathtakingly simple and a definite highlight of the set. MacLellan’s inclusion of one of her father’s most popular songs serves to only compliment the remainder of the songs here including opening song Stealin’, Sparrows, Trickle Down Rain and Now & Then. Silhouette will undoubtedly be one of the best releases from Atlantic Canada this year.
