The newest effort from Ben Harper is an interesting study in contrasts when compared with his last record. The latter, Ben Harper and Relentless 7, saw him team up with a different backing band and create some truly blistering rock that was uncharacteristic of Harper’s typical work. Give Till It’s Gone sees Harper re-enlist the Relentless 7 to back him up, but rather than going for guitar-driven rock songs, there is a subliminal melancholy running through the record’s 11 tracks that isn’t necessarily all that surprising when one considers the turmoil in Harper’s personal life. With his newest record, Harper proves that no matter what is happening behind the scenes, he remains one of music’s most vital artists. Highlights that are worth checking out include Rock n Roll Is Free, Feel Love and Pray That Our Love Sees The Dawn.
