The newest retrospective from the legendary Bee Gees covers little in the way of new ground. After all, their catalogue of songs has been plundered for hits collections like this countless times over the past 30 years. But damn, what a catalogue of songs they have to their credit!
Although I’m partial to their early hits like Massachusetts, To Love Somebody, Words and I Started A Joke, there is a reason why songs like Jive Talkin’, How Deep Is Your Love and Stayin’ Alive have endured all of these years. The three tracks taken from their One Night Only concert (Islands In The Stream, Heartbreaker and Guilty) show that even as late as 1998, most bands couldn’t touch the magical pop touch The Bee Gees had.
It’s really too bad the death of Maurice Gibb in 2003 effectively put an end to the group. The 40 tracks assembled here will serve as a long-term testament to the eternal staying power that these songs will hold.
