After the international runaway success of her last effort, it shouldn’t be entirely surprising that Canadian indie-rock sweetheart Feist would choose a road less traveled for her long-awaited follow-up album. Though she doesn’t completely eschew pop music on Metals, it is hidden under layers of lush strings and orchestration, lending an unspoken heaviness to the majority of these tracks. While making 1 2 3 4 Part 2 would have been the easy way out, Feist seems to be more interested in exploring in the more sullen, moody side of her musical personality with Metals. And while she might not make it back to Sesame Street singing any of these songs, she has delivered an intimate and thoroughly interesting record.
