Review: Zwerg – Dual Citizen (Waspy Mi’kmaq Records)

ZwergThe newest full-length offering from Moncton native Zwerg sees the artist branch off in the ambitiously glorious pursuit of electro-pop. Enlisting the assistance of producer John Philip Shenale (Tori Amos, John Hiatt), Zwerg combines his knack for catchy pop melodies backed by upbeat rhythms that occasionally betray the lyrical content of the song, such as on “I’m A Joke To You” and “Happy Being Crazy.” The record as a whole is not a total exercise in sugary sweetness, however. Zwerg dials things back on “Home Is Where…” and “For The Woman We Love” before ramping the proceedings back up with the album’s final two tracks. Zwerg remains an original voice in the fertile New Brunswick music scene.
