Review: Willie Nelson – For The Good Times: A Tribute To Ray Price (Sony Music Canada)

willie-nelsonThe friendship between country music legends Willie Nelson and Ray Price began in 1961 when the former musician performed with the latter’s backing band, The Cherokee Cowboys. Although Nelson’s tenure with the group was short-lived, their bond was irrefutable right up until Price’s untimely passing in 2013. Accordingly, however, For The Good Times is a celebration of Price’s career, right down to the album cover art, which mimics Price’s 1962 record Night Life. With musical backing by the dynamic Time Jumpers on half of the album’s tracks, the group brings a slant of Western Swing to songs like “Heartaches By The Number,” “City Lights” and “Crazy Arms.” Left to his own devices, however, Nelson doesn’t disappoint, delivering impeccable vocal performances on “It Always Will Be,” and “I’m Still Not Over You.”
