Review: The Rolling Stones – The Marquee Club: Live in 1971 (CD/DVD) (Eagle Rock / Universal Music Canada)

Rolling StonesGiven my recent review of the Stones’ Sticky Fingers reissue that should already be a part of your collection, here comes another essential blast from the past. This Rolling Stones CD/DVD set captures the band in excellent form at London’s intimate Marquee Club approximately one month before the original release of the aforementioned Sticky Fingers. From opening track “Live With Me,” the band delivers a stellar, energetic performance throughout. Their performances of “Bitch” and “Midnight Rambler” are particularly inspired while “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” is given an aural makeover that sees the group incorporate horns while opting to forego the driving beat of the original, but fits into the pace of the show rather flawlessly. This set is a fascinating look back at one of rock and roll’s greatest bands.
