Review: Ron Sexsmith – Carousel One (Warner Music Canada)

Ron SexsmithIn this week’s installment of critically adored but commercially ignored songwriters is Canada’s own Ron Sexsmith. Not including a rarities collection or a collaborative effort with drummer Don Kerr, Carousel One is Sexsmith’s 12th studio effort, and is one that reveals a sort of cautious optimism from the get-go. Sexsmith’s charm lies in his humility and story-telling abilities, where he is able to make the seemingly mundane an entertaining place to spend a few minutes of your time. “Saint Bernard” embodies those characteristics well, as does “Getaway Car,” “Can’t Get My Act Together,” and the easy-going nature of “Loving You.” If you haven’t discovered Ron Sexsmith for yourself, pick yourself up a copy of Carousel One when it hits stores, and see why guys like Elvis Costello, Elton John and Paul McCartney have sung his praises.
