Review: Phil Collins – Face Value (Deluxe Edition) (Warner Music Canada)

Phil CollinsOriginally released in 1981, Face Value was Phil Collins’ debut solo record that firmly established the drummer and vocalist as a tour de force outside of Genesis. Kicking off with the emotionally-charged track “In The Air Tonight,” the song’s iconic drum fill is every bit as powerful and awesome today as it was upon initial release. Propelled by additional singles “I Missed Again” and “Behind The Lines,” Face Value would go on to move an impressive five million copies in the U.S. alone by the turn of the century. This deluxe reissue of the record features a generously stacked disc of live tracks, including the Genesis hit “Misunderstanding” and the aforementioned singles, along with a host of demo tracks including early versions of “Against All Odds” as well as the Genesis song “Please Don’t Ask.”
