Like the album’s title implies, the newest record from Americana indie rock band Deer Tick isn’t exactly packing a whole lot of sunshine. Although the lyrics sometimes border on the depressing, the band’s music sometimes betrays that. The gritty, poppy groove that the band tunes into on a song like The Dream’s In The Ditch is sublime. And while the defiance in John J. McCauley’s vocals on The Curtain is reminiscent of The Replacements, the vulnerability that McCauley brings to Big House and Just Friends is far more telling.
