Review: Leon Bridges – Coming Home (Sony Music Canada)

Leon BridgesIn case you’ve been living under a rock these last five years, there has been a wonderful soul music revival happening, led by Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley and a myriad of others. Leon Bridges’ debut effort Coming Home is the latest contribution to the soul resurgence, and is one that is worthy of your time. Drawing influence from the likes of Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye, Bridges’ silky smooth voice carries the record with the greatest of ease. Backed by an infectious horn section and just right amount of instrumentation – never too much and never too little – Bridges’ old soul shines through on each of the record’s 10 tracks. Album highlights include the title track, “Smooth Sailin’,” the beautiful ballad “Lisa Sawyer,” and “Better Man.”
