Review: Chris Colepaugh and the Cosmic Crew – RnR (Malkin Music / Fontana North)

CCCCA staple of the local, national and international music scene for more than two decades now, Moncton’s Chris Colepaugh and his band the Cosmic Crew end a long six-year break between studio albums with RnR. While Colepaugh and band have dutifully travelled down different musical paths in the past, there is little mistaking that rock remains at the heart of his work. As the band launches into album opener “Stateless”, it becomes immediately evident that the record’s title couldn’t be more appropriate. Colepaugh lays down the groove early and often throughout the record, delivering his acclaimed guitar work with a finesse typically associated with some of the greatest guitarists of his generation. Album highlights include “My World,” “By Your Side,” “All These Faces” and his faithful cover of Big Star’s “When My Baby’s Beside Me,” but truth be told, you can’t go wrong with any of nine songs found on RnR.
