Gin Wigmore – Holy Smoke (Universal Music Canada)

Although a more modern vocal comparison for Gin Wigmore might be the delightful Amy Winehouse, there is an undeniable Janis Joplin, “give ‘em all hell” vibe running through the first long player from this New Zealand artist. With members of Ryan Adams’ Cardinals in her backing band and production by Mike Elizondo, Wigmore’s blend of bluesy rock has a distinct edge if only due to her voice. And even though none of these 10 songs are real knockouts, there is nothing terribly wrong with any of them either. Holy Smoke is a good starting point for the artist; it will be interesting to see where she goes from here.
